Kevin "Cal" Neal Profile
Hi! Thank you for taking the time to check out my profile. You can get more information about me, hear some samples of my playing, and get more information about lessons at calneal.com.
I recently took over a teaching slot at the Music 6000 store in Olympia, WA and teach most of my lessons there.
THE INFECTIOUS LOVE OF LEARNING
The single most important thing that you can do in selecting a tutor is to get one who is passionate about learning, passionate about teaching, and passionate about the subject matter. That passion is contagious, and when the student realizes how interesting even the driest of subjects can be, then they are typically more interested in committing to the consistent hard work that it sometimes takes to succeed.
THE MAGIC OF MUSIC
I primarily teach music - drums and percussion - but as you can see below I also tutor a variety of other subjects.
My background as a musician includes over 25 years of playing experience on drum set, 15 years of orchestral playing, and another 10 years of marching performance. My music teaching experience includes both private lessons as well as group instruction (drum lines, orchestral ensembles), and includes most recently being selected by the Dean of the Los Angeles Music Academy to tutor for Harmony/Theory/Ear Training, and for Hand Percussion, working with both individuals and small groups (4-6 people).
I also have training and experience in recording using several popular DAW software packages, including Pro Tools, and served as a student assistant in the Academy studio. I help recording students set up their own home studio areas, getting mics and channels sorted out, how to apply effects, and get great sounds from the get go.
For more information on my musical experience and the lessons I teach, please visit: www.learningmusician.com/kcal71
OF TECHNICAL THINGS
Success in my previous career as a civil engineer required a strong background in mathematics and various physical sciences. My experience tutoring my peers while in college and graduate school prepared me to tutor today both college-bound high school and home school students, as well as those students already entrenched in college-level studies.
In my work as an engineer, I developed a strong skill set in Excel and Word, including programming custom macros in Visual Basic. I taught a series of workshops in Excel for coworkers, helping them increase their own productivity, and was the resident expert for these software programs at several companies I worked for. I can assist you with your next spreadsheet or word processing task, and show you some tricks to help boost your productivity.
SPEAKING YOUR MIND
I think that to be able to show that you have mastered a subject, or at least are making progress, then you need to be able to communicate yourself effectively. I have decades of experience drafting technical reports, analytical and persuasive essays (some scholarship award winners, I might add!), cover letters and resumes. I also have had to develop techniques for documenting calculations in the technical subjects so that my calculations could be more easily checked and corrected. These critical skills are often the deciding factors in who gets accepted to selective schools, who secures scholarship funding, who gets the best grades, even who is the best candidate for a job, and are ones that I enjoy coaching students on.
FEE SCHEDULE
I teach half-hour and hour-long lessons at Music 6000 in Olympia. Half-hour lessons are $20 each, and hour-long lessons are $40. I also teach occasional lessons in students' homes and studios from Olympia to Tacoma for an additional charge.

"I offer Guitar and Bass Lessons for all ages/levels/styles. This includes acoustic or electric guitar. Beginners are welcome. Each of my students receives a solid musical foundation consisting of instruction in the areas of technique and relaxation, music theory, ear training, melody, rhythm and reading. I also focus on teaching the student music that is fun to play and that corresponds to the particular style that they are interested in, ranging from rock, metal, country, or jazz to acoustic and classical music. More advanced students can focus on specific areas of their playing( i.e. fingerstyle techniques, rock soloing, composition, etc.) I treat all students as individuals and progress is made at a pace that each is comfortable with. I've been teaching for over 25 yrs. and have guided thousands of successful students to their musical goals. Some of my former students are currently professional musicians, others have gone on to music schools, such as Berklee School of Music and Boston Conservatory and some simply enjoy sitting on their front porches and strumming a tune. I teach in a relaxed, friendly, professional style that makes students feel comfortable and produces results.
In addition, I teach studio/computer recording and production, for students or musicians who have a home studio or recording device and I can be hired as a consultant for studio owners who need assistance with purchasing, setting up or maintaining gear or learning new production techniques and programs. I'm fluent in Cubase, Logic, Garageband and Pro Tools and have much experience with Apple computers. I have many references available." -Peter Green

Alex Stein Profile
As a certified professional tutor and UCONN graduate with a BS in Physiology and a BA in philosophy, I have tutored thousands of students in over 50 subjects (9 years or +10,000 hours). I have experience tutoring and teaching students of all ages and cultures, attending schools such as public grade schools, Gateway Community College, SCSU, UCONN, Yale University, and Choate Rosemary Hall.
Tutoring elementary school students means making learning fun and interesting in order to cultivate a life-long passion for learning. Middle school students are a favorite to tutor. At that age, students learn about themselves and start to think about possible vocations. So, tutoring these students doesn't just mean restating seemingly useless information. It's about character building, sharing wisdom, and allowing them to feel comfortable and passionate about learning. I enjoy tutoring High School students by developing their critical thinking skills (necessary for success in college). Finally, I have always excelled with the rigorous demands of college courses and always have loved sharing my practical guidance and quick tips to current college students.
Because teaching is a passion for me, I make learning fun, enjoyable, and practical. I love seeing personal and academic growth in my students. If all you want is to pass your next exam or course, then I love making these students less stressful and more successful.

Michelle Tan Profile
Hi everyone!
I'm currently an undergraduate in Psychology and Anthropology at San Francisco State University. I love my courses and am looking to graduate with the class of 2012. I've had a number of tutoring opportunities that I really enjoyed and I've been told that I'm a great tutor. I'm humorous, charismatic, understanding, and I am able to easily bring myself to the level my students are at.
I've had experience tutoring at nearly all levels of education. My most recent engagement was a volunteer gig with project READ in Redwood City. I tutored a 7th grader in Math and English. Before that, I was a Teaching Assistant for 2 college classes. One of those classes required me to proofread and grade undergraduate level papers. The other required me to hold office hours twice weekly to give personal tutoring to the students who came in. In the recent past I have also taught English to groups of students at college level. One of my classes gave me the opportunity to work with and teach kids with learning disabilities as well.
I enjoy a very interactive teaching style with my students. Depending on my student's learning style, I have no problems using visual aids (drawings, charts) and even movement for more kinesthetically oriented students. I believe that for learning to take place there has to be a good relationship between the tutor and the student. I'm there as a professional, but I care if my student has had a bad day and needs to talk about it. I make it a point to care. I enjoy working with kids and adolescents, although I am open to students of any age and need.
Thanks for reading my profile, and I hope to hear from you soon!

Hi! I'm an energetic, patient, qualified tutor with a B.A. in English and a Spanish minor. I have over eight years of teaching and tutoring experience:
* Music:
Teaching private piano and guitar lessons for 8 years
Have sung with both volunteer and professional touring choirs; private voice lessons in college
* Spanish:
Teaching elementary Spanish grades 1-8
Teaching a private Spanish class to four elementary students
Leading private conversation sessions with intermediate Spanish students in college
Private Spanish tutoring on the intermediate college level
* English:
Tutor in college writing center
Online encouragement/critique of teen writing for Scholastic, Inc.'s website WriteIt
* T.A. for an integrated humanities class focusing on literature, visual art, philosophy, and history; I work as a liaison between professors and students, grade quizzes and essays, lead discussions, and tutor students.
I have also taught first and second grade phonics and worked as an elementary classroom aide.
In college, I've been recommended as a tutor for Spanish, biology, humanities, and linguistics classes.
My SAT math score is 690, critical reading is 760, and I scored an 800 on the writing both times I took it, so I am happy to help prepare students for especially the verbal portions of the SAT.
I'm sure that you know as well as I do that mastery of subject material and even extensive experience does not necessarily mean someone will be a good tutor. I can tell you that what matters most to me is seeing the 'light bulb' go off in a student's eyes, and becoming not just a teacher but a friend and cheerleader as they seek to improve. My passion is finding a way to make something that seems scary more accessible and understandable - what I think of as translating a subject into learn-able terms.

Miss Patty Weber Profile
This is what one local parent wrote. "Patty came highly recommended to us from a friend. She worked with both my children during all three grades at Newhart Middle School, sixth, seventh, and eighth. The subject areas covered Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry. With Patty's help, both of my children were better able to understand the material presented during class times. She was able to explain the math concepts in ways to which my boys could relate. Their grades improved with her help. Patty was also flexible with scheduling and generous with her time." -Bonnie S. Mission Viejo, California
For most subjects I ask the student to prepare for tutoring bringing to the table his or her textbook, workbook, or paperwork, past assignments or tests or quizzes, identifying sections needing explanation and review. I also ask the student to bring blank paper, pencil and eraser, or pen, and in some cases three by five note cards.
My typical approach is to discuss areas where the student is struggling, then review samples in the book, and I take the student through the problems step-by-step clarifying terminology and if necessary, reviewing foundational concepts to help the student better understand the information. I help explain and review then ask the student to show the work of the concept we reviewed. Often we will work through problems in the book that have answers at the back, testing the newly gained knowledge of the student in the same session. My approach caters to each individual based on an intuitive approach, identifying how each student learns, whether by word pictures, tools for memorization, repetitive examples and working through problems or other. In some cases I ask the student to obtain a specific book (for guitar, and computer keyboarding).
Another student wrote: "Patty Weber offered her service to me as a tutor when I was in high school, struggling with the math portion of the SAT. Academically, I have always had trouble with math, I cannot grasp the concepts as quickly as others. Patty adjusted herself to my needsshe did not merely drill the equations and concepts, she taught me with diligence, patience, and compassion. Even though my answers were often wrong, she took the time to show me each step again until I understood. After her tutoring, I took the SAT for a second time, and my math score rose over 200 points (an impressive increase by normal standards). Patty's help was vital to my high school career, without her tutoring I would not have been accepted into as many colleges and my life would not be the same." -Madison R. La Mirada, California (was tutored in Mission Viejo, California).

I offer piano lessons for beginner and intermediate students through The Piano Place store, across the street from White Flint Mall in North Bethesda.
I vary the techniques and teaching approach based on each student's needs. For my younger students, I use special methods, combined with my favorite exercises, crafts and games, to create an attractive and fun lesson format.
I usually divide the lesson into time periods, each with its own activity - this helps the younger children stay focused and motivated. Lessons are $99 for 4 half-hour sessions. The 1st lesson is FREE!
